An atmospheric sounding component linked ocean observations with atmospheric/climate processes. A total of 260 GPS-sondes released during field work measured pressure, temperature, humidity and wind velocity from the sea surface to an altitude of 20-25 km. The combined measurements (CTD and GPS) profiled properties from the sea floor, across the air-sea interface and through the stratosphere. Analysis will offer new insights into atmospheric boundary layer adjustment to sharp sea surface temperature fronts, the formation of fog and stratus cloud deck in the KESS region, and the oceans role in maintaining the atmospheric storm track.
